Phonics

Picture

Description

Phonics is a teaching method for learning to read. Phonics is the breakdown of words into individual sounds.

Why is it important??

  • It teaches students the individual sounds of letters, as well as the sounds that can be made by combining 2 or even three letters togethers. Phonics introduces students to diagraphs and trigraphs. Diagraphs are two letters together that make one sound, like (th), and trigraphs are three letters together that make one sound, like (-ear).
  • Once a student has a grasp of phonics, they will be able to start reading. When they come to a word they don't know, they can use their knowledge of phonics and sound out the word into individual sounds and try to put the word together to say it on its own.
