Phonics Assessments

  • Phonics assessments will help you know what decoding instruction needs to be worked on. It may be best once assessments are complete to break students into groups to work on instruction that is needed for their level.
  • There are several different skills to assess for younger students
    • phonological and phonemic awareness
      • an the student rhyme
      • can the student isolate phonemes
    • letter sound correspondences
      • Does the student know the sounds the letters make?
      • Can the student write down the letter, or letters that make a sound?
    • blending
      • Use nonsense words that use blending and have the student try to pronounce the words.
    • segmenting
      • Can students spell common words, do they know how to break words apart to spell them?
    • sentence reading and writing
      • Tell students a short sentence and have them write it down.
