Emergent Stage - Literacy

Description

At this stage children are learning and trying to read and write for real. Adults often think that children are still pretending. Students are learning that print moves from left-to-right and top-to-bottom. This stage is typically between the ages of 2-5 years old.

Instructional Strategy

  • Concept Sort
    • Have students place pictures into the correct category.
      • This helps students relate words to other words in the same category
    • Have students describe why they put their pictures into the category they did. This helps them work on their justification skills.

The next literacy stage is the beginning stage.
