Writing Assessments

The best way to assess students writing is to watch how they write each day. Have a daily journal or free writes and notice how the student writes. Observation is the best way to see what skills you need to work on. Does the student frequently forget punctuation? Does the student forget to add spaces between words, or does the student still spell words using their phonics skills? How and what a student writes will help determine what instruction needs to be worked on.
