Phonemic Awareness Assessments

Assessments for phonemic awareness must take place when the student is reading and writing.
  • Listen to how the student stretches out a word when they are attempting to spell.
  • Is the student able to blend and segment words as they are reading?
  • Can the child identify rhymes in a book, or in a sentence?
If a student is consistently doing these things, then they have good phonemic awareness. If a student is struggling to do these, then try some of the strategies in the phonemic awareness instructional strategies page.
